It was a version of Pong actually, put on the Oscilloscope. It was made by Ralph Baer after the company he worked for asked him to make a TV. Baer suggested some sort of interactive game for the TV, but his company turned him down. He went ahead and made it anyway.

It was a game called “Nim” - on the NIMROD Computer (May 5, 1951)

The first video game console (a machine that connects to the TV to play games) was the Magnavox Odyssey. It was released in 1972.
