Lose to Win

by Eddie Parker

It is inevitable that at some time while playing poker you will lose. If you go into a poker tournament believing that you will always win the only thing you will end up being is wrong. To be a good poker player you have to realize that losing is just a part of the process, and in order to win at poker you will sometimes have to lose.

There are many different reasons that you would have to lose. For one, you could lose just because your opponent has the best hand. This is something that is going to happen. This isn’t normally a hindrance for many people. Just about everyone realizes that they are going to lose hands and they cannot win every time.

What does become a hindrance however is when people hit big losing streaks. The thing you have to remember is that if you can go on big losing streaks you can also go on big winning streaks.

The important thing is the money. If you are winning more money in the long run then you are losing, you are doing okay. Poker is one huge long ongoing game and money is the only way to keep score. As long as you are winning consistently over a long period, you can consider yourself a winning poker player.

There is no player out there who wins every single hand, it is a statistical impossibility. Ultimately poker is a game of chance, which is why the most talented player doesn’t always win. If the best player always won then you would see the same person win every single tournament, and that would get tiresome. Instead, different people win all the time, because every game is unique.

As long as you look at poker from the standpoint of your overall winnings, instead of an individual game, you will be better able to track your progress. For example, you could lose $50 on a game, which would be disappointing, but if over all you are up $500 then it is really no big deal, just a minor setback and you can try to do better next game.

There is a lot you can learn by losing. For example, if you and your opponent square up and are forced to show your hands, you can learn about that person’s betting style based on the hand they have. The next time they bet the same way, they probably have a similar hand and you can get the better of them.

In some cases, you will need to lose a hand or two just to beat that player the next time around. If you get the right information you may be able to take his money for the rest of the tournament.

If you just keep in mind that poker is ongoing and that you have to lose to win, your life as a poker player will be much simpler. There are just so many different factors out there that it is impossible to win all the time. You have to be able to win more times then you lose and fro there the money will come in. Improve when you can improve and be willing to change our style of play. The rest will all fall into place.
