In this day and age, industry would be severely hampered without the help of support workers solving problems with both computers and networks, while advising users on a constant basis. Our requirement for increasing numbers of skilled and qualified individuals grows, as human beings become significantly more beholden to PC’s in these modern times.

An area that’s often missed by new students thinking about a course is the concept of ‘training segmentation’. Essentially, this is the method used to break up the program for timed release to you, which completely controls where you end up. You may think it logical (when study may take one to three years to achieve full certification,) for many training providers to send out the training stage by stage, as you complete each part. But: It’s not unusual for trainees to realise that their training company’s standard order of study isn’t ideal for them. They might find varying the order of study will be far more suitable. Could it cause problems if you don’t get everything done at the pace they expect?

An ideal situation would be to have every piece of your study pack delivered to your address right at the beginning; every single thing! Thus avoiding any future problems that could impede your capacity to get everything done.

A lot of commercial training providers will only provide basic 9am till 6pm support (maybe a little earlier or later on certain days); very few go late in the evening or at weekends. Never buy training that only supports students through an out-sourced call-centre message system after 6-9pm in the evening and during weekends. Training schools will try to talk you round from this line of reasoning. The bottom line is – you want to be supported when you need the help – not when it’s convenient for them.

Keep your eyes open for training schools that incorporate three or four individual support centres around the globe in several time-zones. Every one of them needs to be seamlessly combined to enable simple one-stop access and round-the-clock access, when it suits you, with no fuss. Never settle for a lower level of service. Support round-the-clock is the only way to go for IT training. Perhaps you don’t intend to study during the evenings; often though, we’re working during the provided support period.

Each programme of learning really needs to work up to a widely recognised certification as an end-result – not a useless ‘in-house’ plaque for your wall. If the accreditation doesn’t feature a major player like Microsoft, Cisco, Adobe or CompTIA, then you may discover it will have been a waste of time – because it won’t give an employer any directly-useable skills.

Validated simulation materials and exam preparation packages are crucial – and absolutely ought to be sought from your training company. Don’t fall foul of relying on non-accredited exam papers and questions. The type of questions asked can be completely unlike authorised versions – and sometimes this can be a real headache once in the actual exam. As you can imagine, it’s essential to know that you’re completely ready for your commercial exam before embarking on it. Revising simulated tests helps build your confidence and will avoid you getting frustrated with unsuccessful attempts at exams.

Starting from the viewpoint that it makes sense to locate the job we want to do first and foremost, before we’re even able to contemplate which method of training would meet that requirement, how do we decide on the correct route? Since without any commercial skills in IT, how could any of us be expected to understand what any job actually involves? Deliberation over several points is essential when you need to dig down the right solution that will work for you:

* Your personal interests and hobbies – these often highlight what possibilities you’ll get the most enjoyment out of.

* Are you driven to obtain training for a certain raison d’etre – i.e. are you looking at working based at home (self-employment?)?

* Is salary further up on your wish list than other factors.

* When taking into account all that the IT industry covers, it’s obvious you’ll need to be able to understand what’s different.

* How much effort you will put into your training.

When all is said and done, the most intelligent way of understanding everything necessary is from an in-depth discussion with an advisor that understands the market well enough to provide solid advice.
